Inspiration from a Dog

Back in 2010, I was inspired by a very special golden retriever, named Buddy, to describe his life as I knew it.  He wasn't the first dog that I had officially rescued, but in my adult life, he was the first dog that my husband and I could call our own.
Shuffled within a variety of homes, we would be the last to adopt this rambunctious, enthusiastic bubbling burst of energy and we were left to figure out which training procedures worked best-a task that at first, proved to be difficult.
Throughout time, with patience and practice, we grew to not only understand the very things that made Buddy tick, but to love each and every thing about him.  We loved him as one would love their own son, because he, in reality, was.
As many dog owners will agree, there is an unconditional, unmatched, and incredible bond that exists between dog and human.  This very bond with Buddy is the glue that united our family and made us realize how important it is to adopt a dog.
As I wrote my first book about dogs and in general, called Finally Home: Lessons on Life from a Free-Spirited Dog, I realized just how many lessons I did learn.  Not just about what to do and what not to do regarding training, but also about life.
There are things in life we often don't do. Perhaps it's because we're too busy.  Or, perhaps we simply forget.
Silly things.  Taking time to play.  Not worrying so much about cleaning the house, instead, taking time to truly enjoy family.  Not worrying about little things.  Taking time to go for walks, enjoy the outdoors, see things for more than a quick glance.
He taught us how important it is to adopt a dog, to rescue a dog that no one wants, to love a dog that no one cares about.  He taught us to continue rescuing dogs, even though he's no longer here to meet them, play with them and cuddle up against them.
Buddy, in his tiny runt-size retriever body reminded us of all these things and that is what led me to write Finally Home.  It is a book about Buddy, but it is also a book about dogs in general as many dog owners have let me know that they can relate.
After I finished writing it, Buddy signed it with his tiny paw print, a black smudge that I'll cherish forever.
I then went on to write five more books about dogs, an inspirational book and four thrillers.
I've listed them here along with their descriptions.  Thanks so much for reading!

Paw Prints in the Sand
Love is a strong word signifying different things to different people.  It is the relationship between man and woman, parent and child, siblings or friends. To many, it is the soulful bond between dog and its human.
Chelsea and Anthony were elated when they adopted Sugar and Spice, a male and a female retriever.  The shelter attendant assured them that the female had been spayed, but the male needed to get neutered.   When Sugar went for a checkup, they discovered otherwise; Sugar was pregnant.
So, when Sugar actually gave birth, finding the perfect owner for each puppy was arduous, but finding an owner for the last pup was downright heart wrenching.  The last pup had just recovered from various health issues and had been nursed back to health by Chelsea.  She had been in her care for six months--just enough time for Chelsea and her to form a powerful bond.
Alas, it was time to find the pup her forever home.  Chelsea rejected many of the pursuers. None were good enough.
But on that warm summer afternoon, the seemingly perfect couple fit the bill. With tears in her eyes, Chelsea handed them the pup, the one she loved as if it were her own daughter. The one she secretly named Foxy.
Two years later, she received a phone call from the veterinarian. A loose dog was found and the microchip led them to Chelsea. It was only then that she discovered Foxy hadn't been given a good home after all.  They had unknowingly handed her to the owners of a puppy mill.
As if a knife had been driven through her heart, Chelsea had a choice to make.  One that would make things right, as they should've been from the beginning. One that would change their lives forever.
A moving love story of sorts that demonstrates the unbreakable bond  and sustainable love between dogs and humans.
 A fictional novella.

The game of life. It's a challenging one-- sometimes breeding days of triumph while other times propagating feelings of despair.
Many have found a way to enjoy a balance-- counting their blessings when times are good and finding comfort with loved ones when the cards are stacked against them.
Others are not as fortunate, taking life's trials to heart, letting them fester into the very depths of their soul, allowing tragedy to dig seemingly irreparable trenches in their hearts.
What they may not realize is that there is a way to tunnel themselves out and patch those dark holes. The picture they've painted for themselves might appear dismal and bleak, but if they make the choice to paint with a different brush, they have the power to change their outlook--quite often with a little help.
You often hear stories about how people rescue dogs, but quite often, it is the opposite that is true. For Harrison Carter, his canvas couldn't have displayed a more dreadful future, but that was about to turn around for him. He was about to discover one of the best kept secrets for happiness. One he never thought could...and would change his life forever. It just so happened that it involved a four-legged creature with a furry coat and a fluffy tail.
A Fictional Novella.

"There is a time in everyone’s life where they have been emotionally inspired or amazed by something that was completely unexpected.  Sometimes it is so touching, that they want to share their experience with the world and tell their story.
This particular story is about a precious heart along with a free-spirited little boy who owns that heart.  This little boy has expressive brown eyes, a beautiful smile, and golden brown coat that he never takes off. He also has a huge pinkish-brown nose and four very fast legs.  His name is Buddy. He answers to that…when he wants to."
Buddy was a dog that no one wanted, yet he became one of the quirkiest, friendliest, smartest and most cherished of dogs. The reader is not only drawn into the book, but learns from the unfortunate mistakes of others and how to think outside of the proverbial box. It gives the reader hope that if they are going through a similar ordeal, they can also successfully overcome any related obstacle.
If you are looking for a great gift for both dog lovers and even non-dog lovers, this book is perfect. Get ready to laugh a little and perhaps even shed a few tears.
*A portion of the proceeds from the sale of "Finally Home" will be donated to an animal rescue group.*

After the publication of "Finally Home," Buddy was diagnosed with terminal cancer.  Once the unthinkable happened and Buddy's precious life was cut short, his family was left heartbroken and devastated.
At the same time, in another state, poor economic conditions forced another family to give up their golden retriever.
As fate would have it, his name...was Buddy.
While they were mourning the loss of their beloved dog, another dog was mourning the loss of his treasured family.
Brought together by misfortune, they entered each other's lives to help put back together the pieces of their broken hearts.
This story is for both Buddys, producing the subtitle "Buddys' Book."
*A portion of the proceeds from the sale of this book will be donated to an animal rescue organization.

"Bark Out Loud" is a compilation of motivational and thought-provoking quotes—some about dogs and some about life in general—that have been inspired by my own dogs, as well as those that I've met and those that I'll never have the opportunity to meet. Many of the quotes are meant to motivate, some are meant to initiate a smile and others are simply thoughts to ponder. All of the animal-related pictures in this book are either of dogs or cats that we—or someone we know— had the opportunity to rescue. If you enjoy goofy photographs of animals or pretty landscape pictures along with uplifting words, then this book is for you!

A portion of the proceeds will be donated to animal rescue organizations.
*Please note this is a short book under fifty pages.

Are you a dog-lover?  If so, you're not alone!
My Dog Does That! is a humorous, uplifting, feel-good book about what all dog-lovers have in common: dogs and the reasons that we love them.
Some days they make us laugh, other days they make us crazy, but one thing is for certain; they do some interesting things that non dog-lovers wouldn't understand.
Do you ever feel a bit awkward due to the stunts that your dog has pulled? Do you ever feel as if you are the only one whose dog embarrasses them at not-so-convenient times? How about those wonderfully sweet and tender moments that you so badly want to brag about, but are afraid others may not understand?
We dog-lovers can all relate to the everyday occurrences when it comes to our furry friends because our dogs do that too!

Growing up with phobias that have terrified him his entire life, Matt Brewer had finally made the decision to go to counseling, seeking help once and for all.
He entrusted his emotions in the hands of strangers and depended on them to help conquer his fear.  What he did not count on was having his fears become a distinct reality, leaving him fighting for his life and the lives of those around him, including his girlfriend whom he intended to marry.
Tortured and bound, he comes face to face with evil with no one to hear his screams.  Time is of the essence and it’s a literal race against the clock in order to make it out alive.
*A portion of the proceeds from the sale of this book will be donated to a dog rescue organization.

What if the life you were living was not the one you were meant to live?
One man. One moment in time. One horrific night. That was all it took.
Alexandra had married the man of her dreams and they had their whole life ahead of them. They had a wonderful marriage, a beautiful house and essentially they could not be happier. Things were falling into place as intended, until one beautiful evening turned devastatingly tragic.
The catastrophic events that transpired ensured that none of their lives would ever be the same. Faced with an impossible moral decision, Alex had to make a choice that would come back to haunt her in years to come, once again forcing her to tempt the hands of fate.
How does a random murder shatter the many lives of those within the killer's path? How do you pick up the pieces of your life when unforeseen circumstances alter your future forever?
Unwanted Dreams provides just the right amount of twists and turns, leaving the reader in suspense, pondering the following question: How strong is the bond that exists between families and how far would you be willing to go to save your own?
*A portion of the proceeds from the sale of this book will be donated to a dog rescue organization.

Childhood rumors are often prevalent in a family-oriented community.  Some boast that they have seen a UFO flying overhead while others claim to have witnessed a ghost soaring through the trees.  Some stories are so believable that they trickle down from sibling to sibling, friend to friend; creating a neighborhood buzz that lingers for years.
Ryan Sheffield’s neighborhood was no different.  Though no one would admit it, adults and children alike were freaked out by the eccentric woman who lived in the ghastly corner house, but aside from that, his world as he knew it was an ordinary one.
Bizarre situations did not surface until Ryan began working at his very first job.  To his peers and superiors, it was just a traditional office. To Ryan, it was much more than that after a series of inexplicable occurrences haunted his every conscious moment.
Through a bit of intense research, he uncovered the building’s gruesome history and was led down its horrifying path.  He opened the door to a hell he did not want to live in and tried his best to avoid the evil that surrounded him.  The truth revealed itself to him in more ways than one; a truth he was better off not knowing and one that could essentially end his life.
Jacqueline was invincible.  As a young teen, she knew what she wanted and how to achieve it.  Even when she was framed and arrested for a crime she didn’t commit, she managed to pick up the pieces of her life and move forward.
In a world apart from hers, Montgomery Vendora carved himself a life full of crime, deceiving those closest to him and taking chances without regret.  There would be no reason for their lives to ever collide.
When a series of unfortunate incidents find their place in her life, including accidentally stumbling upon incriminating key evidence, Jacqueline’s world begins to crumble.  She is forced to avenge fate, playing a role she had never intended to take part in, receiving help from an unexpected source.
A child should feel the safety of their parent's touch, the warmth of their compassion and the benevolence of their soul. For Peyton Bishop, it was quite the opposite. A victim of domestic abuse, Peyton, along with her mother, Morgan lived under constant fear of her father.
When Morgan sustains an injury from one of the beatings, Peyton needs to spend the night at her grandparents. As a method of enforcing her silence, her father gets rid of her golden retriever, Teddy and makes her believe it is her fault, showing her once again who is boss.
Once Morgan recovers, she promises that she will bring Peyton to safety in hopes of living a normal life, but Peyton continues to suffer from the sting of her father's words, an overwhelming guilt about losing Teddy.
A fictional story, centered around hope, love and loyalty between a child and her dog, that depicts emotional scars left from child abuse.

What's So Great About Dogs?

I went to an event once in which I was selling my books about dogs, as well as my thrillers and book of inspirational quotes.  I had displayed a sign that said "A portion of the proceeds will be donated to animal rescue."  This has been my goal since I began writing books about dogs in 2010, starting with Finally Home: Lessons on Life from a Free-Spirited Dog.

This wasn't a dog-related event, so I wasn't sure if anyone would be interested in my books about dogs, however, many people stopped by and were interested.  While everyone was friendly, I did have a woman come to me and ask a question-one in which I thought was very bizarre.  She asked, "Why so many books about dogs?  What's so great about dogs?"

It wasn't the first time I had been asked that question by a non dog-lover.  Needless to say, each time I'm asked, I don't know how to respond.  It's not that I can't explain it, because like all of us dog-lovers, I can rattle on for a day and a half about all of the amazing things dogs do and why I love them so much, but I don't know if I should explain it.  Will the inquisitor ever really understand?  Will they get something from the conversation?  Some might.  Those who really are interested might.  But those who ask in a condescending manner might not be so apt to really hear what I'm saying.

So, how did I answer this woman?  I gave her a brief summary.  And, for those who already know the greatness of dogs, I'll share that summary with you.  I'm sure you'll find yourself nodding in agreement.

I love them because they possess complete and absolute loyalty.  They love without barriers, they love without hesitation and they love with everything that makes them whole.  They reserve no judgment and hold your heart in their paws taking great caution to shield it from any kind of pain.  They cuddle when you want to cuddle, console when you want to cry, and play when you want to laugh.  They speak not a word of your language, yet their conversations with you speak volumes.  They hold no grudges, so you need not ask for forgiveness.  I love them because they are the epitome of innocence, the purest of angels in the body of a canine.  And I stick up for them because they can't stick up for themselves. Why do I love a dog?  I ask you, what's  not to love?

That is the summary that usually leaves a person nodding their head, not quite sure of what to say next but hopefully walking away with a slight curiosity if those words were really true.  Hopefully they walk away with a better understanding.  But one could only hope.

I write thrillers because I love exploring the darker side of my mind.  I love seeing how far I can stretch the imagination, seeing my characters come to life.  I love writing about characters I love and characters I love to hate.  There's a certain thrill in not only reading thrillers, but writing them as well, but I also love writing books about dogs.  Some of my dog-related books are non-fiction and /or humorous, while others are fiction that are based on fact.  I hope to bring awareness about dog rescue, dog abuse, puppy mills and the importance of adopting a dog.

By writing these books about dogs, if they prompt at least one person to adopt, then it has all been worth it.  If just one person opens their eyes the next time they walk into a puppy store and realize they are looking at the workings of a puppy mill, then it will all be worth it.  If we can end dog abuse and make the laws stricter...then, yes, it will all be worth it.

So many wonderful people contribute to helping dogs and all I can do is give a virtual thank you to everyone.  There are people who spend numerous hours in a rescue group, or fostering dogs, or doing administrative tasks for dog rescue.  There are those who donate their time, money or both.  Every little bit helps a great deal and I'm proud to associate with these types of people.

It's true that dogs can't speak for themselves.  They can't tell you where they hurt.  They can't describe their past to you.  They can't tell you they don't want to fight or that they don't want to be abused. They can't call the police or signal for help.  That is where we all come in.  To be their voice and to make sure that their needs are met.  We're here to make sure that in the future, they'll be less dogs on the streets and more relaxing in the confines of a warm and secure household, sitting on the lap of their favorite family member.

Thank you for reading and for doing all that you do!

Dogs Making a Splash!

What a Swimmer!

Ever since Brandi was  a tiny little thing living on Long Island, NY, she loved to swim and was good at it from first try.  Her little legs paddled across our above ground pool so quickly, we had to be in there with her to make sure that her beautiful nails didn't rip the liner on her way out.

Brandi Swimming

Never to be outdone, her older brother, Buddy frequently made the same attempt, but couldn't outshine Brandi as her agility skills were far too superior.

As described in my book about Buddy, called Finally Home, he wasn't one to go down without a fight, so,  he was relentless in learning. After a few tries, he was much better than when he first started .  He enjoyed a good splash in the water, but never could match Brandi's stamina, instead, he enjoyed swimming to a raft and getting pulled around by his obliging owners, yes, my husband and I.

Occasionally, Brandi would show him a thing or two by swimming over to his raft and like a child at play, bumped him off, leaving him to swim for himself.  This was one of many things that Brandi did to demonstrate her wonderful skills and perhaps even flex her alpha dog muscles once in a while.

Far better to have her flex them at play, rather than at war as for any dog that had entered our household, she had ninja techniques to subtly show them who was boss.  Throughout the years, no dog that has entered our home has ever been confused about their rank on the canine hierarchy.

The Tradition Continues

We have since moved to Las Vegas, NV and instead of an above ground pool, we have an inground which thankfully means, no liner to watch out for.

As Buddy has since passed on, we are reminded of him by our dog Duke, whom we adopted last year.  Another dog who was unsure about stepping foot in the water, he's been with us a year and has since given in just a bit, satisfied with wading in the small area, while Brandi eases right in to a full swim.  Duke, looking on with amazement, watches her carefully.  I assume the wheels spinning in his mind the way Brandi swims circles around him.

As for Toffee, who knows how to swim, she wants no part of it, happiest watching from the sidelines for fear of getting her silky coat wet.

Simplicity is The Best Medicine

These are the things that are simple, yet they are forever embedded in our minds about our dogs.  Every dog owner has a story.  Every dog owner can share a unique quality, a trait that makes their dog's personality one-of-a-kind.  Yet, in some way, we can all relate.  Some of the things our dogs do are similar.  It is those things that had inspired me to write a book on the topic, called, My Dog Does That!  It's for all of those quirky, untouchable things that make us love our dogs immeasurably.

What does your dog do that you find comical, sweet, or even frustrating?  Please share in the comments.  I'd love to hear your story!

Hearts of Gold

Please join me in welcoming Duke in his SECOND cover model experience since we've adopted him less than one year ago.  Duke had come to us in November of 2012 and he was unable to walk and unwilling to eat.
After a series of veterinary visits, tests and lots of prayer, we found out that our foster (at the time) had been diagnosed with Lyme Disease.  Even though he wasn't ours, we did everything we could to make him well again...and thankfully, he started walking and eating.
Since then, we've added him to our family and also to the cover of two of my books.  The first was Paw Prints in the Sand: Mission Accomplished and the second is my newest book, Hearts of Gold.

Hearts of Gold:

Paw Prints in the Sand: Mission Accomplished

In the prequel, Paw Prints in the Sand, you read the heartwarming story about Foxy, the Nova Scotia Duck Tolling retriever who was mistakenly sold to the owners of a puppy mill and lives to tell about it. Her story is one of encouragement and hope and enables us to realize how important it is to band together and save the lives of other dogs living in the same type of cruel environment. That is, if you can truly call it living. After all, these poor dogs are merely existing in cramped cages without proper food, exercise, medicine or love.
The inspirational sequel continues with a bit of a twist. A man suffering with what some might call a critical mid-life crisis (and then some) is contemplating life and trying desperately to find reasons to stay alive.
His wife left him, he hates his job and despises his less-than-appreciative boss. Life as he knows it is pointless. A chance situation gives him reason to smile and he finds himself conversing with a couple of men who are excited to begin a new venture building a modern dog shelter called, "Paw Prints in the Sand. "
Often, we hear about dogs that have been rescued by humans, but rarely do we acknowledge that the opposite is actually true. Discover how Harrison's life is drastically changed by opening his heart to these four-legged creatures. You'll find yourself in agreement that often it is our furry friends that rescue us just as much as we rescue them.

Can You Relate?

Dogs are walked and you think to yourself.  Self?  Time to relax.  Time to sit back, turn on that television you've been meaning to watch and enjoy your favorite television show.  But no, there's always one in the bunch that still wants to play.  In my case, her name is Toffee and she's on a mission.  As I sit to stare at the television, her toys are throw in the air blocking my view.  But, she has that award-winning smile. How am I supposed to resist? She thinks because she's been on the cover of a few of my books that she can rule the roost.  Well, guess what.  Ugh.  She's right.  We're going for a walk now.  She won...this time.  Stay tuned for more of Toffee's adventures.  They'll be plenty!

Hearts of Gold

Hearts of Gold was an emotional book to write as it combines the horrific life of a child who has experienced child abuse with the loss of a dog.  While a work of fiction, it demonstrates the strong bond between children and animals and how dogs can help heal on an emotional level.

Hearts of Gold is available on Nook, Kindle and in Paperback!!

Thanks for stopping by!  It's a Golden Thing is a blog in which I intend to devote solely to animals.  While it will contain a lot of cool dog things, don't be surprised to find pictures of cats, lions or any other animal!

This also means there will be lots of pictures, lots of links to other dog posts and lots of links to my dog books! Any information I have about dog products, reviews or services, I'll be sure to post here.

This blog was inspired by my passion for dogs and dog rescue, as well as by one of my books, called, Paw Prints in the Sand.  Stay tuned for future posts as I get this blog on its feet!

The History Behind Paw Prints in the Sand: Mission Accomplished

When I finished writing Paw Prints in the Sand, a strong emotion came over me.    As any author should, I loved the book.  I loved the characters, the story and of course, the dogs.  But more than that I loved the feeling that what happened at the ending could—and has—happened in real life.  At least on some level.

While reading the story, I felt as if I were on an emotional rollercoaster.  In order to fully portray the real horror behind puppy mills, I had do to something I didn't want to do. Research.

I don't mind researching information for any story, but for this one, I knew what I found was going to break my heart, yet it was necessary.

I found myself having to stop and take a break from writing because the tears were streaming down my face.  That should give you a good indication about how awful puppy mills truly are.  Once I pulled myself together, I continued on.

At the same time that finished writing it, a puppy duck toller wandered into the hands of a rescue group and into my living room to foster.  The irony hit a chord with me.  See, duck tollers are not common here but yet as I was writing the ending, I was staring into the eyes of a breed that this very book was about.  A two month old at that.  I simply knew it was going to be special and because of that...I didn't want it to end.  Well, not quite.

So, I took a break and in a month's time I thought of the perfect sequel.  And that is how Paw Prints in the Sand: Mission Accomplished came about.

The sequel, while a continuation of the first book, takes the story a bit further.  I wanted to demonstrate how powerful the bond is between human and dog.  It is very real and certainly tangible.  For those of us that have been there, we already know.  Some are just finding out for themselves.

In Paw Prints: Mission Accomplished, a man suffering with what some might call a critical mid-life crisis (and then some) is contemplating life and trying desperately to find reasons to stay alive.

His wife left him, he hates his job and despises his less-than-appreciative boss. Life as he knows it is pointless. A chance situation gives him reason to smile and he finds himself conversing with a couple of men who are excited to begin a new venture building a modern dog shelter called, "Paw Prints in the Sand."

Often, we hear about dogs that have been rescued by humans, but rarely do we acknowledge that the opposite is actually true.  Harrison often rolled his eyes at his friends who called their dogs "kids."  Now, he was one of them.

Harrison's life is drastically changed by opening his heart to these four-legged creatures. You'll find yourself in agreement that often it is our furry friends that rescue us just as much as we rescue them.

Every once in a while a dog walks into our life, changing our world forever, making us wonder how we ever got by without one.
